How Does the Out of Province Inspection Work?
Four simple steps to get your vehicle registered in Alberta
-
Step 1: Get Your Request Form
Visit any Alberta registry office and purchase a 'Request for Out of Province Inspection Form.' You'll need ID, your vehicle's VIN, and about $9. The registry gives you a paper form to bring to us.
-
Step 2: Book Your Appointment
Call us at (403) 887-0440 or book online. Bring your request form when you arrive. The inspection must be done in the name of whoever will register the vehicle.
-
Step 3: The Inspection
The inspection typically takes 1-2 hours. We check everything the Alberta government requires—brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tires, glass, structure, and more. You'll receive a digital report showing exactly what we inspected.
-
Step 4: Your Results
Pass: You'll receive a certificate valid for 14 days to take to the registry. Fail: You'll receive documentation listing exactly what needs repair. You have 10 days to complete repairs and return for re-inspection.
New to Alberta? Two things before your appointment:
- Pick up an Out of Province Inspection Request form from any Alberta registry and bring it.
- Have the registration details ready — the name and address of whoever the vehicle will be registered to.
Not sure what you need? Call or text (403) 887-0440 and we'll walk you through it.

What If My Vehicle Fails?
You have options:
• Have us do the repairs — We'll give you an estimate upfront. No surprises.
• Go elsewhere — You can have repairs done at any shop. Return here for re-inspection (half hour labor charge).

Frequently Asked Questions
Last verified against Alberta Transportation: June 2026. Official rules govern — see Alberta's out-of-province vehicle inspections page.
Do I even need an out-of-province inspection?
Yes. If your vehicle is currently registered outside Alberta, it has to pass an out-of-province inspection before you can get Alberta plates — it's a Government of Alberta requirement, not a shop upsell. Once it passes, you take the certificate to a registry to license the vehicle here.
Can my vehicle be exempt from the inspection?
Some can. You may be exempt if you fit one of Alberta's categories: a brand-new vehicle bought or leased within the last 90 days from a factory-authorized dealer in your name (if it's a new vehicle imported from outside Canada, you'll also need a completed RIV inspection and a stamped Transport Canada Form 1); a commercial vehicle with a valid commercial inspection certificate issued within 90 days; or a private passenger vehicle from BC, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba under the New West Partnership — newer than 4 years (the current model year plus the previous 3), or one that passed a government inspection there within the last 90 days. Vehicles that can never be exempt: flood-damaged, salvage, non-repairable, unsafe, rebuilt, right-hand drive, custom or homebuilt, kit cars, and lifted or lowered vehicles. The registry forwards your documents to Alberta Transportation, who makes the final call. See Alberta's exemptions guide.
What is the New West Partnership?
It's a trade and labour-mobility agreement between the western provinces — BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan signed it in 2010, and Manitoba joined in 2017. The provinces agreed to recognize each other's standards to make moving and doing business across them easier. For out-of-province inspections, it's the reason a private passenger vehicle from BC, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba can be exempt if it's newer than four years (the current model year plus the previous three) or it passed a government inspection in that province within the last 90 days.
How much does it cost?
$167.95 taxes in (reg. $188.95) for most cars, SUVs, and light trucks. Heavier trucks may cost more due to the extra time needed to disassemble brakes for measurement — we'll always tell you before we start.
What's the process?
Per Alberta Transportation, it's four steps: 1) Buy a Request for Vehicle Inspection Form at any Alberta registry. 2) Bring the vehicle and that form to a licensed facility — that's us. 3) If it fails, complete repairs within 10 days. 4) Take the passing Certificate of Inspection to an Alberta registry within 14 days.
How long does it take?
Plan for up to about 2 hours on average. It varies with the type and condition of the vehicle — a clean, late-model car goes quicker, while an older truck that needs the brakes pulled for measurement takes longer. Booking an appointment keeps it moving.
What if my vehicle fails?
You complete the required repairs within 10 days, then bring it back and we re-inspect — verifying just the repairs, not the whole vehicle again. Miss the 10-day window and it becomes a new full inspection. You can have the repairs done here, at another shop, or do them yourself.
How long is my inspection certificate valid?
You have 14 days to take the passing certificate to an Alberta registry. After 14 days from the date of issue it's no longer accepted, and the vehicle has to go through a full out-of-province inspection again — so don't sit on it.
Who's allowed to do the inspection — are you licensed?
Yes, we're licensed. An out-of-province inspection has to be done in a licensed facility by a journeyperson technician licensed under Alberta's Vehicle Inspection Program — and that's us. We've been a licensed Alberta inspection facility since 2006.
What does the inspection check, and why?
We inspect to Alberta's safety and equipment standards, following the Automotive and Light Truck Inspection Manual — and your vehicle has to be within the manufacturer's (OEM) service limits to pass. The point is to keep unsafe vehicles, and vehicles that are stolen or built from stolen parts, off Alberta roads. It covers vehicles coming into the province and vehicles that have been in a collision.
Do I have to get repairs done at your shop?
No. You can have repairs done here, at any other shop, or do them yourself. You'll just need to return for a re-inspection so we can verify the work was completed.
