When Is a CVIP Required?

Alberta Transportation requires annual inspections for commercial vehicles based on weight and operation:

Intra-provincial (within Alberta): 11,794 kg+ GVW — Annual

Extra-provincial (crossing borders): 4,500 kg+ GVW — Annual

Buses (10+ passengers including driver): Any weight — Semi-annual

If your vehicle operates commercially and meets these thresholds, it needs a current CVIP certificate and decal.

The Inspection Process

A CVIP inspection typically takes 1-2 hours and includes:

• Brake disassembly and measurement
• Wheel removal and inspection
• Steering and suspension evaluation
• Lighting and electrical systems
• Tires, wheels, and coupling devices
• Body and frame inspection
• Full safety system check

We follow the criteria in Alberta's Commercial Vehicle Inspection Manual. Pass/fail is based on government standards—no opinion involved.

If You Pass

CVIP certificate, decal showing expiration, documentation for records

If You Fail

Documentation of deficiencies, repair here or elsewhere, return for re-inspection

About the CVIP Program

The Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program is administered by Carrier and Vehicle Safety Services under Alberta Transportation. As a licensed facility, we:

• Maintain facility standards set by the province
• Pass regular compliance audits
• License technicians through the program
• Follow inspection criteria from the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Manual

Inspections are standardized. Our technicians make observations and compare them to government guidelines—pass/fail is determined by the manual, not opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CVIP inspections

How long does a CVIP inspection take?

Typically 1-2 hours, depending on the vehicle. Inspections require brake disassembly and wheel removal, so it's not a quick walk-around.

What if my CVIP has expired?

You can still drive directly to an inspection facility—but only there. No stops. If pulled over, you must show proof of a scheduled appointment. Get it handled before it expires.

Do you inspect vehicles with air brakes?

No. Air brake systems require a heavy-duty facility. We inspect light trucks, trailers, buses, and other commercial vehicles without air brakes.

Can you do repairs if my vehicle fails?

Yes. We're a full-service shop. If your vehicle fails inspection, we can quote and complete repairs, then re-inspect once work is done. One stop.

How do your fleet programs work?

We track your vehicles, schedule inspections and maintenance, and maintain service records. Contact us to discuss your fleet—every operation is different.
