Out Of Province Inspections
If you are looking for information on an Out of Province inspection you’ve likely just moved to the area. If that’s the case, we’d like to welcome you to Sylvan Lake! You’re probably looking for a new, local repair shop and we would love the opportunity for Sylvan Lake Autopro to earn your business!
Our friendly staff can help with the out of province inspection, and we also offer full automotive repair on cars and trucks. We CAN also service your new “on warranty” vehicle while maintaining your factory warranty. No more drives to the dealership and long waits.
The out of province program is administered by the Alberta government. In order to participate, a shop must be certified, pass ongoing audits, and have their technicians certified and registered. We are also mandated to have a specific set of tooling to ensure we can accommodate the inspections. Shops are regularly audited, and vehicles must meet the criteria set by the government. Below you will find links to both the out of province inspection PDF as well as the manual that we must follow. Any specific questions are answered there, or feel free to give us a call!
Did you know we have free service loaners and rides home?
How does it work?
The first step is to visit a registries office and purchase a “Request for Out of Province Inspection Form”. To obtain this, you will need personal identification as well as your VIN or serial number. There is a small fee payable to the registry office (Approx $9 as of this writing) and they will provide you with a paper form to bring to us.
Secondly, book an appointment with us and bring your request form in. We will collect your information, and we need to know who the vehicle will be registered to. It is important that the inspection is done in the same name as you wish to later register your vehicle with.
After the inspection is completed, you will be advised if your vehicle passes or fails. Either way you will be provided with a record of the inspection.
If your vehicle passes the inspection, we will provide you with a certificate that you can then take to the registry office to obtain Alberta registration. This certificate expires 14 days after being issued, and if not used, you will require a second inspection. Note that in Alberta insurance is sold separately form registration, and you will need proof of valid insurance to obtain registration and an Alberta plate.
If your vehicle fails, you will be provided with an inspection form that outlines the deficiencies, and we will also provide an estimate for repairs. You then have 10 days to complete the repairs, and if they are not done within that time, you will be required to complete another inspection. (This requirement is set out in the programs rules)
You do not need to have the repairs completed here, however if you complete the repairs yourself or at another facility a re-inspection fee will be charged. We charge this fee as we are required to bring the vehicle in and check that all repairs have been made and are correct.
Do I need an out of province inspection?
Any vehicle that has not been purchased new or last registered in Alberta will require this inspection.
My vehicle is new, do I still need an out of province?
If your vehicle is less than 90 Days from the date of purchase, you may qualify for an out of province exemption! See the link below, and if you have questions call the
Alberta Out of province Exemptions link:
How much is an out of province inspection?
We charge $179.95 ($188.95 Tax Included) for most cars, SUV’s and light trucks. Some vehicles do have additional charges, such as heavier trucks where more time and even parts can be required to dis-assemble the brakes. We need to inspect and measure all brake components. This is typically only on older or larger vehicles, and we will always advise you of this ahead of time. You will never receive a bill higher than you have authorized at Sylvan Lake Autopro.
I heard that if I am moving from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Or Manitoba that there may be exemptions for newer vehicles?
Yes! The New West Partnership has been created and it allows for vehicles up to 4 model years old to be exempt from the out of province inspection. If you move from one of these participating provinces and your vehicle is less than 4 years old (Current model year – 4) then you will not be required to have an inspection completed. See link:

What about insurance?
In Alberta insurance is sold separately from the plate and registration. You will need to have valid insurance and a bill of sale in order to get a plate. You will need to obtain an “in-transit permit” if you do not have current insurance from your previous province. Call your local registry office to get more information about in-transit permits.

What happens if my vehicle passes the inspection?
You will be provided with a certificate stating your vehicle passed the inspection. You will then need to obtain insurance and take proof of insurance as well as the certificate to the registries office. They will then register your vehicle and give you your new plate!
What if my vehicle fails the inspection?
If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will need to have the repairs completed within 10 days or the inspection expires. After that you are required to have the inspection completed again. This is not our rule but a program requirement.
Do I need to have the repairs completed at the same place the inspection is done?
No! You can have the repairs completed anywhere you like, but you will require that the vehicle be re-inspected before getting your certificate. We are required to bring the vehicle in and ensure all repairs have been satisfactorily completed.
Is there a charge to re-inspect my vehicle?
Yes, we are required to bring the vehicle in and lift / re-inspect all work. We charge a half hour for re-inspection, but depending on requirements additional time could be required. (This would be discussed up front). If the repairs are simple such as a windshield replacement or bulb, we will provide the re-inspection at no charge. Please ask for details.
